What Is Post-Production?

Post-production is an umbrella term that refers to all the processes that take place after the director yells “cut!” for the last time. During this stage, the director, production team, editors and designers combine the visual, auditory and other essential elements they amassed to create the finished product.

At Motion Picture Enterprises, we understand the importance of post-production, as more than half of film and TV show production time takes place in an editing suite. Our team ensures you have everything you need to complete your project.

The Post-Production Process

The post-production team carries a weighty responsibility. They are in charge of taking hours of raw footage and piecing the material together in a way that tells the story they want, makes sense to the audience and looks aesthetically pleasing. They must ensure all dialogue is audible and the important moments have adequate screen time. The team also must fit the finished product into the desired time frame.

How do they do it? By breaking the process down into more manageable steps.

Picture Editing

The first step involves paring the footage down as much as possible. The rest of the project will build upon the moments chosen for display, so picture editing is the necessary first step of any post-production process. This stage gives your team a rough cut that shows them where everything needs to be.

Sound Editing and Mixing

Next, the sound team and foley artists will work together to mix sounds. During this stage, the most important steps include:

  • Making dialogue clear.

  • Removing unnecessary sounds and background noises.

  • Creating new background noises and sound effects.

  • Re-recording corrupted dialogue.

  • Licensing and inserting music.

VFX, Coloration and Graphics

Once the project is as visually and audibly set as possible, the effects and design teams can work their magic. These groups are in charge of adding the special effects, setting the color scheme and creating extra graphics like credits and title screens.

Distribution and Advertising

Finally, it will be time to look at the project as a whole and prepare it for export, distribution and promotion. This step involves creating posters and trailers, setting up Digital Cinema Packages (DCPs) for theatrical releases and adding accessibility features like translation materials and captions.
